Happening amazingly for the first time ever with XX we have four female writer directors, Roxanne Benjamin, Karyn Kusama, Annie Clark (aka St. Vincent), and Jovanka Vuckovic coming together to channel their creative ju-ju into four tales of horror and suspense. Let’s see what the Ladies have to offer.
We open with The Box. A story about a young boy whose loss of appetite becomes the undoing of a family.
Next up is The Birthday Party. A darkly comic take on the lengths a mother will go to to give her child a perfect day.
Third on our list is Don’t Fall. A tale on the perils of camping off the beaten path.
And lastly we have Her Only Living Son. A new take on coming of age and the love of a mother and her son.
Folks, I was really looking forward to XX since I’d heard it announced two years ago. An all-female anthology finally! The world of horror is male driven from writers, directors, and the fans, it was past time the ladies got up to bat. So it’s with a heavy heart that I have to share that the films that comprise XX are not good. I think most glaringly they aren’t very horrific. I just felt like I was waiting for something ovaries to the wall through the run time. And at best it was middling and at times boring. It just didn’t live up to the hype. I really hope that this is the beginning of something though. We need more women spewing blood and guts every which way. Let’s face it that’d be rad. So see it if you must to say you did but that’d be the only reason.
